The boat's traditionally laid out accommodation plan with four berths in total has been altered slightly with the forward cabin's original 'V'-berth configuration having been converted into a full-time, full width double, with a chain locker provided in way of the original soleboard at the time of a manual windlass being fitted to the port forward end of the coachroof (to ensure that the berth was not compromised with a centre-line chain pipe running through), a feature devised to bring the weight of anchor cable aft from the stem of the vessel).
The galley is placed to port side (thereby enabling the vessel to be hove to on starboard tack) while 'brewing up' or preparing a meal, while an aft-facing chart table is conveniently located close to the companionway to starboard and affords plenty of protection to the chart table itself.
Straight (and parallel to the centreline) settee/berths in the main cabin are 6'6" & 6'9" respectively, located amidships for maximum comfort and utility and are provided with lee-cloths and additional lee boards, while a bulkhead-mounted and fold-away table with two leaves maximises the useable sole area.
In the Rustler 31, the relatively generous heads compartment could be accommodated to the port side of the centreline and consequently is totally independent of the need to serve as access to the forward cabin. The vestibule area to the starboard side of the centre-line, opposite the heads compartment features a hanging locker, fiddle storage and a shallow locker over that side's saloon berth.
Forward Cabin: Features a double berth beneath an aft-facing acrylic forehatch for light and ventilation. Cushions are of deep foam and appear to be of good, heavy quality. Artificial lighting from two swivelling, bulkhead-mounted lights. Hull sides and undersides of forward and side decks are vinyl lined on independent, screw-fastened plywood panels. Sail stowage under the forward end of the berths, while the two under-berth lockers at the head end of the berths are retained too, with the original space between the berths has been converted into the chain locker.
Heads Compartment: Fitted with a 'Lavac' marine flushing toilet, this compartment is more than just a 'cupboard with toilet squeezed in' and has a deep hand basin (with hand-pumped freshwater), and mirrored splashback to the main bulkhead. Well placed grab handles at both high and low positions and deep under-deck, closed lockers. Headroom in this compartment is approx.5'6".
Main Cabin: Two parallel settee berths face each other across a relatively narrow sole, with deep lockers (used for food and staples beneath the port side's berth and battery and sailing equipment to starboard). These under-berth lockers are ventilated to assist in maintaining freshness. The berths' backrests offer large, closed lockers within and, in the case of the port side, a deep fiddled shelf above, while to starboard there are more individual and closed lockers and a fiddled book shelf. Lee boards have been provided to supplement the original lee cloths fitted to these two berths.
Galley: Located to port of the companionway, the original cooker has been replaced with a more modern Plastimo unit, fitted with flame-failure devices to the two burners and grill. The space beneath the cooker is sensibly utilised for a swing-top rubbish bin and bulk stowage. The galley is fitted with a stainless steel sink and moulded cool box (no refrigeration). Note the lifted laminate to the cool box lid seen in our pictures has subsequently been re-bonded. Dedicated crockery stowage beneath the port side deck and large staples storage in closed locker abaft the cool box.
Navigation Area: This is located to starboard of the companionway and faces aft. The deep chart table features significant for' and aft depth to accommodate paper charts, with a significant stowage locker beneath. The Navtex Pro, VHF radio and Garmin 152 GPS are mounted on a fascia above. A generous degree of stowage for books and almanacs has been provided beneath the starboard side deck, alongside the Navigator's left arm.
