Sadler Starlight 39 – 1991 - £84,500 – Blue Water Ready

The Sadler Starlight 39 is a very well-regarded British-designed & built cruising sailboat that combines good performance, solid offshore capability and comfortable accommodation — a yacht that appeals to sailors wanting a boat that can both cruise and cover ground quickly.

The Starlight 39 remains a classic choice for sailors who want a mix of performance cruising, solid build quality and traditional yacht aesthetics — good for coastal cruising and very capable on longer bluewater passages.

The yacht’s seaworthiness was proven very early — for instance, one of the first Starlight 39s finished the 1990 two-handed trans-Atlantic race in demanding conditions, something many production cruisers struggled with. The Starlight 39 is known for blending speed, seaworthiness and comfort — a relatively rare combination in production yachts of that era.

‘Asteria’ has been extensively updated for long-distance bluewater sailing and is fully ready to comfortably & securely cruise the world independently. She has 800W of solar, plus a wind generator, supplying a custom-designed 12V 600AH Victron lithium battery system. This provides ample energy for all systems, including a fridge/freezer. Her modern B&G electronics including two chartplotters, radar, autohelm, wind, depth and forward scan are comprehensive, and with all running rigging returning to the cockpit making her very easy to handle either solo or shorthanded sailing.

Accommodation

While some customisation was available to the Starlight 39 model when new, this example was fitted out as per the designer’s original plans - by far the most sought-after version. This consists of a forward cabin containing a double 'V' berth and an en-suite forward heads compartment; a marine toilet, hand-basin and shower.

The saloon has a further two settee berths with a central, double-leafed table. Aft of the seating area there is a forward-facing chart table and navigation position to port and a galley to starboard.

Aft of these, to either side of the companionway steps, doors lead through to a large double cabin to starboard and an aft heads compartment to port with toilet, hand-basin and shower in a similar layout to the forward heads. A further door leads from the aft heads directly into the aft cabin so making this an en-suite and day heads.

An Eberspacher Airtronic D4 diesel-fired heating unit is fitted, with hot air outlets to all cabin spaces, while a Panasonic 'Mixtrax' DAB radio/CD player is fitted for entertainment.

Forward cabin: Large 'V'-shaped berth with deep 200mm Aerofresh™ Comficel memory foam mattresses with cooling layer and anti-moisture underlay new in 2024; storage under berth, open shelving storage to hull side above, hanging locker aft to port and convenience seat, 12v Caframo fan, 2 opening portlights in addition to a large deck hatch over. Twin 13a socket supplying 240v from inverter with USB points. 1 X 13a socket supplying 240v from shore power with USB points

Forward head: En-suite heads to forward cabin with Jabsco sea toilet with hinged convenience seat over the WC, moulded hand basin with pull out shower attachment. Hot and cold pressurised water. Overhead opening hatch and portlight.

Saloon: Light-coloured teak veneered plywood, with hardwood cappings, with grey/blue tone upholstery. Generous, centre-line dining table with folding leaves and internal drinks storage. Settee berths to both port and starboard, with lee cloths. A higher-level pipe cot to port converted to shelving and the secure location of portable 12V fridge/freezer unit and Victron 1200 inverter/charger. Hard-wearing 'Decamel' flooring panels throughout with hold down catches.

Galley: Neptune 4500 two burner gas cooker with oven and grill (new 2023) with certified gas system. Dometic 65ltr 12v/240V front opening fridge/freezer (new 2023). Top opening cool box with chiller unit. Double stainless sinks with hot and cold pressurised water. Ample storage and tailored shelving for plates and cups. Useful additional work area provided by a pull out extension within the aft worktop.

Navigation area: Forward-facing, full size chart table with stowage inside and under its seat. 12v and 240v distribution panels. Hanging locker aft of the Nav. area.

Aft cabin: Large double berth with deep 200mm Aerofresh™ Comficel memory foam mattresses with cooling layer and anti-moisture underlay, new in 2024; open shelving storage to the hull side; hanging locker and drawer storage under the berth. Vanity unit in wall rear of saloon stairs. Two opening portlights providing good cross-flow ventilation. Caframo fan. Access door to 'en-suite' facility provided by the aft heads.

Aft en-suite/day use heads: Moulded heads compartment with Jabsco sea toilet, moulded hand basin with pull out shower attachment. Hot and cold pressurised water.

Mechanical and electrical systems

Ford Mermaid Meteor MkII (56hp), four cylinder, indirectly-cooled naturally aspirated diesel engine is fitted. Run with regular oil & fuel filter changes. New cam belt, water pump, crankshaft seals fitted Feb 2025, alternator belt and water pump belt - all new in 2026, checked weekly. All injectors reconditioned Sept 2025 with new leak off pipes fitted. Raw water pump new seals and bearings Nov 2025

• New Vetus exhaust gooseneck added to raise the hose above the waterline, preventing seawater from back-siphoning into the engine (2023)

• New S/S exhaust elbow fitted including modification to install an anti-siphon loop and vent (2021)

Electrical systems:

The entire battery and charging system was upgraded to a Victron-based Lithium system, fully integrated with solar, wind and shore power charging systems in 2024. The system is bluetooth and VE Direct connected.

Sails & Spars

Aluminium alloy keel-stepped mast by Selden (badged as a Kemp mast) with twin spreaders. Cutter rig provision with removable inner forestay and running backstays for use with a staysail/asymetric hoisted - in addition to forward and aft lowers for more frequent use.

Extendable spinnaker pole stowed as dip pole on mast (new 2023) and 'rod' kicker fitted to main boom.

Standing Rigging:

Lower aft laterals replaced and rigging re-tensioned (January, 2026, A&A Rigging, Antigua)

Original Furlex roller furling system (service 2024, Eurospars, UK)

Inner forestay replaced and Wichard baby stay adjuster with pelican hook permanently attached. Deck fitting added for easy deployment (2024, Eurospars)

Lewmar Winches - 2 off 46 Self-Tailing primaries, 2 off 40 secondaries, 2 off 43 self-tailing halyard winches on the coachroof, with covers for 46 & 40s.

Serviced annually

Sails:

• Mainsail - Fully battened with 3 slab reefs (2018); tri-radial cut in 10.8 oz 'Dimension' Polyant DCXI-H cruising laminate sail cloth, with 5 full width battens and low friction wheeled Rutgerson 'battcars' and intermediates (new intermediates fitted and sail serviced Dec 2025, North Sails, La Marin, Martinique). Adjustable leech line fitted, running through a headboard- mounted block and down the luff for convenient adjustment at the gooseneck.

• Yankee - 100 % tri-radial cut sail (2018) Dimension Polyant DCXI-H cloth, triple stitched with foam luff and blue UV suncover. Serviced in Sept 2025, The Sail Loft, Chaguramas, Trinidad

• Genoa - 140% Larger genoa; age unknown. Serviced 2023 and stored dry since

• Staysail - age unknown but in 'good' condition. Still crispy!

• Stormsail - Excellent' condition. Never used. (2018)
