The Sun Odyssey 42 DS is an indulgently spacious design offering a centre-line double berth within the aft master cabin, en-suite heads and an almost equally generous double forward cabin, again with an en-suite heads. If one wants to convert the main saloon's starboard side seating to a double berth, this particular example has the facility to do so, but more usually the main saloon would be used as two single berths on night passages.
All overhead deck hatches are fitted with combined roller blinds and insect screens.
A stereo radio/CD player is fitted in the main saloon, with a pair of speakers here and duplicated by waterproof speakers in the cockpit.
The forward cabin's double berth is fitted along the centre-line, with over 0.5m width to it's forward 'foot' end and good access to the bed offered by the sheer accessible breadth at it's aft end. Dressing is made easy by a small seat to port of the generous area of cabin sole. A hanging locker, with shelved storage is also fitted to port, opposite the relatively large en-suite heads. 240v and 12 volt sockets and TV antenna output socket. A smoke alarm is fitted.
En-suite, forward heads compartment is generous in size, with a combination shower/mixer tap facility to the hand basin and draining sump. A hand pumped marine toilet with 'large' bowl is fitted. A mirrored and fiddled shelved locker is provided above the hand basin, with two additional bulky item lockers also provided. Light and ventilation is provided by an overhead hatch.
The main saloon is at a raised level - a step above that of the forward cabin - and refreshing light levels are encouraged by generous and stylish side windows, combining with overhead hatches/windows in the leading edge of the coachroof and fixed, hull-side portlights to either side. The 'light and bright' theme continues through the colour of the upholstery and use of pale toned veneers and contrasting hardwoods.
A pedestal-mounted table is offset to starboard, with welcoming wrap-around seating offering some snugness for after dark. The table may be lowered and a cushion is included to be able to use the seating in conjunction with the table as a double berth.
A fixed and forward-facing 'Chart Table' is located toward the aft end of the saloon to port, still with its own dedicated navigator's seat. 12v DC and AC electrical distribution panels are located immediately alongside the navigator's left shoulder in this area. An entertainment radio/CD player by Sony is located here too, connected to a pair of saloon speakers and two waterproof cockpit speakers.
A 240V AC, flat-screened TV is bulkhead-mounted to the starboard forward end of the saloon and remains with the boat upon a sale.
A primarily L-shaped galley to starboard that incorporates a shallow indent to assist in the cook's security while underway incorporates a large stainless steel sink and a large, top-opening 130 litre refrigerated cool box that does not impinge on the need for straightforward working surface too. Jeanneau's upgrade of an Eno cooker with it's two-burner hob and oven is fitted and protected by a stainless crash bar, with a 220-240V AC microwave fitted above and outboard of the cooker (beneath the side deck). The closed stowage offered by this galley is practicable as much by dint of sheer volume, as by particularly clever design - it works as a result of refreshing simplicity combined with space in all areas.
A day-use heads compartment located immediately to port of the foot of the companionway may be secured from within to offer en-suite facilities to the aft master cabin. Generous headroom offers practicable showering. The mirrored under-deck locker encloses fiddled shelf storage. A hand pumped marine toilet is fitted with a holding tank facility provided.
Abaft the galley, accessed through a doorway to starboard of the companionway, the Master Cabin's centreline double berth is lit from above by an opening hatch and from each side by fixed hull ports. Two opening port lights to the coach roof sides also ensure good cross-ventilation in hot climes. Dressing seats are fitted to either side of the cabin, while a double-door hanging/shelved locker is located to starboard. To either side of the berth itself, there are top-access lockers for bulky clothing. A deep-fiddled top to the rear access of the engine space provides small-item stowage and a mirror above, combines with the foot of the berth for hair brushing and make-up application. 2 X 240v and 1 X 12 volt DC sockets, plus a TV antenna output socket.
